Summary
Weeks Environmental was engaged to project manage the writing of two books for the Woodland Trust which profile the best 101 woods to visit in the South West of England and 101 woods from the Chilterns to the Welsh borders.
Background
The Woodland Trust has produced a series of guides to woodlands in different regions and
countries throughout the UK, which are illustrated with maps and photographs, with concise
descriptions and a key of access arrangements and location details. Hundreds of woods from
Cornwall through to Oxfordshire, and north and west to Shropshire were surveyed, the results
Analysed, and the best woods chosen for the two books, and edited in the Woodland Trust’s
house style.
The Project
A database of hundreds of potential woodlands in different ownership was compiled and
permission sought to access the sites. Field researchers were sent out to describe the
woodlands, which were then reviewed as to their potential for inclusion in the
books. A painstaking process was then conducted to ensure the editorial policy of the client
was adhered to, and details correct prior to publication. Weeks Environmental worked closely
with the client, a professional editor and the woodland owners.
What has been achieved?
Over two hundred woodlands were then included in the two books project managed by Weeks Environmental, thus enabling greater and wider public access to our rich heritage of woodlands. Field research was also undertaken for the North East England and Welsh Exploring Woodland Guides.
