Many birds of marsh and wetlands delve into the soft ground with their beaks to find the various insects, worms, molluscs or other invertebrates that they feed on. In our Bird Beak Adaptation Game, we have a cross-section of land, clearly showing how these food sources live at differing depths.
The accompanying bird hand puppets have beaks that are to scale. As the participants try to access the food with the various ‘birds’, they quickly learn the advantages of beaks of different sizes and shapes.
Our puppets also aid in the recognition and understanding of different birds and their habits.
